Description
The Vine Trust is a Christian organisation that works with all hard to reach young people. Their work covers Educational projects, youth work, catering and training programmes. The Vine Project is situated at the northern end of the Caldmore area of Walsall Borough, to the south-east of Walsall Town Centre. The Caldmore area is one of the most deprived in Walsall. It is an ethnically diverse area.

The PRU, Second Chances, gained Independent School Status in January 2004 and is aimed at 14 - 16 year olds who have been excluded from school but feel that they want to have another go at learning. Pupils are referred by their mainstream school or by Education Walsall, and take part in a re-engagement programme lasting from one term to one year, that is designed to get them back into education. Pupils attend daily and learn in small groups, receiving lots of support from the staff. The curriculum offers lots of useful information and is designed to get each young person thinking about what they want to do with their lives.

The 'Learning Through Work' project gives young people between the ages of 16 - 25 who have left school with few or no qualifications, the opportunity of work experience and studying for catering qualifications in their Restaurant and Catering Service. Catering qualifications can then lead on to further employment in the industry.

The Vine Trust is also able to offer training courses for 16 - 19 year olds in first aid, basic food hygiene and CLAIT (Computer literacy and Information Technology) courses.

The 'Access Centre', has a pool table, play stations, juke box and access to the restaurant. Youth workers are always in attendance and there are drop in sessions on two days and two evenings during the week.

Following on from the success of the drop in sessions, workers run special events focussing on topics of importance to young people such as healthcare, drugs and pregnancy. ‘Can't Cook Wants to Cook’ is a project for young people in supported housing that aims to provide them with an experience of basic cooking to get them away from the 'tomato sauce sandwich', a greater understanding of healthy eating and an understanding of budgeting and food prices. T he project is also giving the young people an opportunity to work together to achieve a given objective every month which assists with self esteem and confidence.

A members only website for 13 - 25 year olds has games, downloads, instant messenging, details of youth events and volunteering opportunities and a safe chat room.
Mission Statement
"Through the Vine, we aim to facilitate Christian outreach to young people and the wider community, by providing venues free from compromising pressures. This will be achieved by involving local Christian, professionals and community workers etc., meeting them at their point of need, irrespective of colour, creed or status in the community..."
Objectives
We have geared our project to work with the ‘hardest to reach young people’ e.g. school non-attendees, excluded pupils, young people on the edge of the drugs culture etc., with the aim to move them to a better, realistic, circumstance.
Staff Profile
1 manager with 26 mainly part time workers including 1 Urban Devotion worker and tutors that may only work a few hours a week.
Linked Organisations
Links with Connexions as some workers are trained Connexions PA's and carry out work in local schools. They also have workers that go into 4 local schools mentoring young people at risk of exclusion. Further links exist with Breathing Space, another Christian organisation, the Allan Wells Community Association, Young Leaders in the Community and Urban Devotion.
