| | Description | The project seeks to engage young people by using a range of learning/teaching methods such as card games, leaflet reviews, poster/leaflet making, role play, small group discussion, quizzes, etc. Confidentiality issues are clearly explained to participants to promote open discussion and create a relaxed and trusting environment. There is a strong focus on making sure the venues, course content and group size all work to maximize the learning potential of the young people taking part. Young people, staff members and parents/carers have all been consulted on programme content.
Participants are encouraged to explore a range of views, to develop their own opinions and to challenge stereotypes. Attendance on the programme is intended to promote self-esteem and confidence, assertiveness and improve decision making skills to enable each person to make informed decisions about their own and other people’s drug use.
The content of the project is consistent with the National Curriculum Key Stages 3 and 4 (11 - 14 years and 14 - 16 respectively) and uses up-to-date learning resources for young people.
The project primarily works with vulnerable young people aged between 11 - 19 years of age falling into the following groups: young offender, school excludees, young people in need but not in local authority care, young people in need and in local authority care, any other groups identified locally as having significant unmet needs. In addition, a number of other "harder to reach" groups will be targeted including: young homeless people, young people involved in prostitution, young Gypsy and Irish traveller people, young refugees / asylum seekers, young carers, truants from school, young people with disabilities, children of drug using parents/siblings, young women with substance related problems. | | Mission Statement | | All young people in Stoke on Trent identified as being vulnerable to drug misuse and associated problems will receive appropriate drug education, advice and information to increase their knowledge, understanding and confidence in dealing with drug related issues." | | Objectives | To provide young people with the knowledge, confidence and abilities to make their own informed decisions about drug use.
