| | Description | Research carried out by the project worker identified heavy use of alcohol, cannabis, solvents, ecstasy, cocaine, crack and heroin in the area. The research also identified that young people were wanting more sport and dance events and that these events could be used to raise drug awareness.
After school activities are run on a regular basis and freelance dance and drama teachers visit the Youth Club. The project worker combines, these classes and Learning Music / DJ workshops with drug awareness sessions.
A local music group attends music workshops where young people have to think up drug awareness lyrics which are then performed.
‘Fun Day’s are arranged in the area giving workshops on drug awareness. All young people attending the youth club are signposted to modern apprenticeships, colleges and the connexions careers service.
Football coaching is organised as a free activity for young people who might otherwise not afford it. Football matches with young people and the police at Shrewsbury Town’s ground help build relationships between young people and the police.
Outreach sessions with a nurse on the NACRO Mobile Bus which has pc and internet facilities are also organised and the drugs worker gives presentations utilising a drug specimen box and a jar of tar!
It is hoped that a previously successful drop in centre for 16 – 18 yr olds will be re-opened once a new location can be found – hopefully within a local 6th form centre.
