Description
The approach of Positive about Young People (PAYP) is to focus on positive aspects of each young person, influencing the attitude of young people, their families and the communities in which they live. The first steps are to build relationships with young people and their families. By re-engaging them, they can then be re-directed to activities, opportunities to gain skills, training, further education or employment.
The strategy includes providing young people with a safe place to meet and facilitate a range of activities initiated and led by young people. Parents and carers are also supported as opportunities are organised for them to meet and discuss the positive aspects of their children.
Team members identify priority areas through outreach work and visiting youth clubs and groups for young people. They are then able to facilitate activities that are initiated and led by young people. Positive Operational Drop-in Areas (PODS) can be deployed if there are no local facilities for the young people. PODS are mobile, specially manufactured cabins equipped with heating, lighting, music centres, information, tables, chairs and basic sporting equipment.
Local agencies working in partnership with PAYP provide a range of Easter and summer holiday sport activities, creative activities and day trips, music activities and IT skills, performing arts, drama and crafts and activities for young people with special needs. Specific groups are also targeted e.g. In the summer of 2003, the Nuneaton Caribbean Friendly Association offered an insight into the Caribbean lifestyle with activities such as traditional cooking, street dancing, African drumming, hair braiding and nail and body art using traditional designs. Young people are encouraged to try new activities whilst having fun and part of the success of all activities is seen as being due to their taking place in locations close to where the young people actually live - as this eliminates the need for them to make travel arrangements to get to activities. 'Chips and Sports' activities are also run by PAYP sessional workers in a range of locations throughout Warwickshire during the summer holidays. The Crimebeat scheme will fund projects run by young people that help to make their communities safer places and assist in reducing crime. Funding is available of up to £500 for each project and the scheme encourages young people to identify crime and safety issues. It will then assist in developing projects to help tackle the issues. Further information can be obtained from the Crimebeat Co-ordinator on 01926 413282 or crimebeat@warwickshire.gov.uk
