| | Description | The service is able to provide a range of diversionary activities for Young People at a Tier 2 level through the various partnerships they have with local organisations.
4 members of staff work with the Youth Offending Service – with a staff member based in each of the three YOT's and I staff member working with YP in custody. ADSIS staff will continue to provide the work started by community staff and will support each young person when they come out of custody to get them back into community services. If a young person requires further interventions, then ADSiS will look at obtaining appropriate help.
The service also works in partnership with Connexions in the East (Burton-on-Trent, Utoxeter and Tamworth) and North Divisions (Newcastle-under-Lyme & Staffordshire Moorlands).
The Tier 3 project has 5 staff covering the county DAT area. Close links are in place between the Consultant paediatrician and prescribing GP's and staff to provide a seamless service for young people.
Staff have undergone training in auricular acupuncture which will be offered to young people in the near future. Auricular acupuncture is seen as a very valuable intervention for any service user, especially with misusers of stimulants and cannabis as there isn't an alternative prescription that can be offered. It’s useful as a tool to help young people relax from their often chaotic lifestyles.
Home detox is available and will be arranged by the paediatrician with the ADSiS workers carrying out the detox and supporting the young person in the home setting. Occasionally they have to look at sending a young person into residential rehabilitation and this would be out of county. There is also sessional support from a Consultant specialising in mental health issues.
They are keen not to have an 'adult' service for young people as it's strongly felt that young people have different needs and they are looking at different ways of offering a needle exchange service separately from the adult service. A scheme has been piloted in a couple of pharmacies but has found young people were not keen on this. Staff working with young people now carry a small stock of equipment but this is not available to young people who are not actively engaged with the service, they must want to work with staff and the emphasis is on harm reduction and finding ways in which to engage them in the service.
The main base is in Utoxeter but the service will work with young people to see them in appropriate locations such as their home, school, youth club or GP's surgery. This is quite costly but found to be a more effective way of engaging with young people.
ADSIS can also provide alcohol and drug awareness for staff and client groups as well as one to one and group support. | | Linked Organisations | | Links with YOT, Connexions, Social Services, and with a Consultant Paediatrician and prescribing GP's.
