| Description |
Four Pupil Referral Units run like a normal mainstream school, offering the National Curriculum and activities such as ice skating, golf, skiing and drama. One Unit is specifically for KS1 & 2, another for KS3, one for KS4 and the fourth is a specialist medical and pregnancy unit. This unit has tutors who work in hospitals and has a crèche for young mums so that they can continue with their education after giving birth. The medical unit works with the pupil and their condition basing attendance and work on what the pupil is capable of aiming to build up hours of attendance. KS1 and KS2 pupils attend daily either am or pm, KS3 pupils attend daily unless they are on 'respite' (last chance at their school before exclusion), then they will attend part-time and will hopefully get back into the right frame of mind to attend their school without further problems. When a child is first referred to Pathways they will have 1:1 sessions before attending classes.
Very good relationships exist with schools in the area who work towards involving the young people at Pathways in projects. A joint drama project is underway at KS3 level and other KS3 pupils are attending a project at Wolves FC for football training and IT skills. Pupils have also taken part on an American Dance workshop. Generally pupils are given lots of options and different activities to join in with. The older pupils have a bus pass so that they can attend and are allowed to use this at weekends so that they can get out and about. The bus pass and opportunities to join in activities are seen as incentive and these are taken away from them if their behaviour fails expectations.
Ratio of pupils to teachers is low and each teacher has an assistant. All teachers have drug awareness training and drugs specialists are also brought in if further expertise is required and funding allows. |
