The service gives advice and information on drugs to all young people as part of youth activities. Young people are engaged through youth units and detached work and as with all youth groups, a variety of activities is available. There are over 40 clubs and projects in Wolverhampton and many more voluntary organisations serving young people. Most youth clubs meet once, twice or three times a week and are often open from 6.30pm to 9.30pm.
Young People have the opportunity to build on existing interests and/or develop new skills such as: music, dance, drama, skateboarding and in-line skating, basketball, football, netball, cricket, power kite flying, rally karting, mountain biking, photography and sound recording. Youth workers are always looking to improve on the range of activities on offer and welcome suggestions from young people.
Although the core age range is 13 – 19,the drugs service will see younger or older people if they have problems.
Recognising that there is sometimes a lack of confidence in workers in dealing with issues surrounding drugs, the training of workers especially in the legal aspects is vital for the service so that they know all workers have the confidence to deal with situations and incidents and that they are totally aware of what they are legally able to do with regards to drugs.
Young People also need to be heavily involved all along the way with drug education and awareness, as they can put issues and ideas into their own words and make it more meaningful. |
