Description
Dudley has 2 team leaders and 13 PA's working together in a variety of needs led settings and roles across Dudley. Working with schools, colleges and the Youth offending team, PA's also work with BME groups, the teenage pregnancy unit, Looked after Children and young people looking for work.
The service has a PA who is deployed at the Zone, Dudley's young people’s service, who supports the Key workers as well as carrying out Connexions work. This PA receives supervision from the Manager at the Zone and in turn passes this information on to the generic PA's within the Dudley Connexions service which assists their work with young people affected by substance misuse and supplements the mandatory substance misuse training that all PA's undertake.
All PA's have regular supervision with their team leader. They do not offer counselling so will refer on to the Zone.
Advice, help and support can be given for any problem that a young person may have, including help with benefits and housing. Motivational activities are offered for young people undergoing treatment for substance misuse through a programme of Positive Activities for Young People. Courses are accredited and give focus and support to each young person as they go through treatment. Quite often, it's not appropriate for young people on treatment programmes to be on courses open to all but some will be integrated into wider groups if they will benefit from this.
The Black Country Connexions website has drug and alcohol information alongside other lifestyle advice. Black Country Connexions also has a double decker bus that is jointly used with the voluntary sector. The bus is equipped with computers and internet access and a number of other facilities to assist in engaging young people in the community.
Objectives
Young People often face barriers with services that don't make it easy for them to use such as claiming benefits, so the PA's offer support, guidance and practical help. They do however aim to progress each young person, to improve their self esteem and skills so that they act for themselves and are not dependant on help from others.
