Description
Working within an holistic framework to enable young people with substance misuse issues to cope with all areas of their lives including housing, education, training and health. The service offers impartial, free and confidential counselling, advice and information for young people. A free condom service is also available for young people.

The drop in service is open from 10am - 5pm Monday to Wednesday, 12 - 5pm on Thursday and 10am - 4pm on Friday. Clients using the needle exchange service at The Warehouse will often be supported during the week by the What Centre.

An Outreach worker goes into the community visiting schools and youth clubs to deliver PHSE, sexual health and substance misuse education.

The centre offers placements to students on the Post Graduation Counselling Course at Birmingham University this means that they have a wide base of counsellors to call upon to help young people. Once a young person has been assessed they are matched to a counsellor who best suits their needs. A variety of approaches is used including person centred, cognitive behavioural therapy and psychodynamic approach. A young person has to sign up to agree to see a counsellor and sessions are usually once a week.

Although the majority of funding is for young people up to the age of 19, many long term clients continue to use the facilities up to the age of 25. It is hoped that further funding will become available to enable the centre to offer a Tier two qualified counselling service for young people with dual diagnosis, substance misuse and mental health problems.
