Method of Access: Automatic referral for any young person entering the criminal justice system with a substance misuse issue. Can also be referred through other third parties including an initiative with the Children's Fund (Youth Inclusion Section).

| Description |
The service comprises of three teams, one each in Herefordshire, North and South Worcestershire. Each team has a Substance Misuse Worker who has attended courses in prescription management, safer injecting and other areas to enable them to carry out a range of services across all four tiers.
Initial assessment of young people referred will ascertain the level of interventions required. Some young people will only require drugs awareness education; others will require counselling and possibly treatment. If treatment/detox is required, the substance misuse worker will liaise with the local CDT for GP appointments but will manage the prescriptions themselves.
There is specific targeting of those in contact with the YOT + during 2003 a team was set up to do work with young people aged between 8 and 13 years old to prevent them becoming involved in offending. This work is done in partnership with the Children’s fund. |
